The CUSD Board of Trustees voted on May 7, 2026 to move forward with the renaming process for Cesar Chavez Junior High School. Naming recommendations were accepted from the community, and an ad hoc committee of parents/guardians, students, employees, community members, and Board members met on May 30 to review the recommendations.
After a thorough and respectful discussion, the committee narrowed the list of 53 eligible recommendations to three ranked finalists for the Board's consideration at a future public meeting.
Finalist Recommendations:
Louie Arrollo Junior High School (tied for top recommendation)
José M. Hernández Junior High School (tied for top recommendation)
Eastgate Junior High School
Next Steps:
Staff will present the committee’s recommendations to the Board of Trustees during an Information & Study session at a regularly scheduled Board meeting on June 11 at 5 p.m.
A renaming item will be presented to the Board of Trustees for consideration at a regularly scheduled Board meeting on June 18 at 5 p.m. At that time, the Board will have the opportunity to select one of the three recommended names.
