Baseball- CIF SJS D1 Playoffs
Central Valley 3, Lincoln-Stockton 2
In one for the ages, the CV Hawks defended their home turf in style last night with a thrilling 1-run playoff victory over the visiting Lincoln Trojans. It was a gorgeous afternoon for baseball as the playoff crowd was abuzz with excitement. Tyson Hunt took the hill for the Hawks and picked a good time for one of his best performances. The Junior left-hander stifled the Trojan bats all afternoon in tune to a complete game win. The CV offense did just enough as Adrian Vega was the hero with a clutch 2-out, 2 RBI single in the 5th which capped a 3-run inning for CV. The Hawks would hold onto this narrow lead in dramatic fashion as the Trojans rallied in the 7th. Lincoln was able to put one on the board to shrink the CV lead to 3-2, but with 2 outs and the tying run 90 feet away, Tyson Hunt stuck out the Lincoln batter to send the Hawk crowd into a joyous frenzy! Congrats to the Hawks on a day to remember and a great playoff win. CV’s reward will be a trip to Stockton on Friday to take on the mighty St. Mary’s Rams (#1 seed). The Hawks are no stranger to the underdog role as this baseball program pulled off one of the biggest upsets in SJS history just a few years ago by defeating the Elk Grove Thundering Herd. It will take some similar magic tomorrow, but our Hawks will be ready for challenge. Good luck to Coach Bussard and our baseball team as they look to punch their ticket to the semi-finals.
Softball
Ceres 9, Central Valley 8 (9 innings)
In what turned out to be the WAC Championship game, the Bulldogs were able to plate a run in the bottom of the 9th inning yesterday to defeat the Hawks. The Hawks battled hard throughout and this extra-innings affair was a back and forth fight all afternoon. Even in defeat, we are very proud of our softball team on a fantastic regular season (2nd place) and a playoff berth. CV finished up 15-10 overall and 12-2 in the WAC. The Hawks will now await their playoff fate as the brackets will be released on Friday. Congrats to Coach Bates and our softball team on a great season so far. We still have work to do in the playoffs!
